AUTO-TUNE

After conquering recording studios, Auto-Tune has become the universal language of contemporary music. This documentary explores the phenomenon through the eyes of some of the biggest names in French rap.

It all began with Andy Hildebrand, a software engineer in the oil industry, who was challenged to develop a program that could enable anyone to sing in tune. Twenty-six years later, Hildebrand is a millionaire, and his invention can be heard on the vast majority of songs played on radio stations and streaming platforms around the world.

Originally designed to correct vocal pitch, Auto-Tune has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade. Once a closely guarded secret—used discreetly and sometimes without artists’ knowledge to protect their pride—it was dismissed by traditionalists before emerging as a powerful creative tool. Today, it has become a symbol of musical freedom, allowing virtually anyone to find their voice and, in many cases, become a singer. More than just a piece of software, Auto-Tune has sparked a profound aesthetic and cultural revolution.
